Story Hour

Each Thursday we make the 30 minute drive to Landrum to visit the public library for story hour. While we're there, we also visit Mimi at her office, occasionally join her for lunch, and always visit Honeychild Children's Specialty Shop where I sell my bows and, now, dresses and skirts.

Story hour has been a learning experience for both Gracie and myself. We go to the "lap babies" class (even though she's a bit bigger) because she doesn't quite qualify for the preschool class. When we first began going to story hour, Gracie had never been in a "class" setting before. The first time we went, she stood right in front of the book when Mrs. Nancy read, wandered around the room at will, and threw down every time they had to put a toy or instrument away. Needless to say, I wanted to die, and ended up dragging her out kicking and screaming before stickers were handed out at the end. Being a teacher of young children, I knew that one try was not enough and that I would have to continue taking her back each week so that she could learn how to act appropriately (no matter how much mommy humiliation I had to endure). I am proud to say that things have gotten MUCH better! While she still won't sit still, she has learned how to participate with the other children and even can put the bells away without crying. Yay!

Here are some pictures from last week's class. It was game day, so she was wearing her Carolina pride :o)

Shaking the bells during "Muffin Man." Each week they parade around the room with their bells to certain songs. This was the first week she followed the line by herself. This is by far her favorite part!

Follow the leader...

Putting her bells away!! So proud!

Mrs. Nancy has learned to work around Gracie while reading books. Sometimes she even gets the primo spot on Mrs. Nancy's lap.

Waiting her turn to put her "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" magnet on the cookie sheet.
I'm so glad that I decided to continue taking Gracie each week. Mimi was kind enough to get us a Spartanburg County library card, so now we get to check out books also. Thank you!
