Jack's Baptism

Sunday marked an important day in the life of our sweet baby boy and our family.
Jack was Baptized!

Since we haven't yet found a permanent church home in Greenville, we felt it was necessary to return to our home church, St. David Lutheran, for this important occasion.
It is special to us because our pastor, Pastor James, also married us and Baptized Gracie!

Another special tradition we share is our family Christening gown.
It is 54 years old and has been worn by 11 babies in our family.
It's gorgeous, covered in ivory lace, and it even has an ivory satin coat and bonnet to match.
It was handmade for my Aunt Jane, worn by three other babies in the Luehring family (including my mother), worn by my cousin Lee, worn by ME, my brothers and sister, and worn by Gracie and Jack.

(I was, honestly, kind of worried that Chad might freak out about him wearing a "dress," but he said it was fine because it was tradition.  Fortunately, only three people mistaked him for a girl...)

Getting dressed...

The actual Christening...

"I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
Mark 1:8

He was so good!
He didn't cry or even make a peep.
(I, on the other hand, may or may not have shed a few tears.)

Left to right:  Jack's Godparents, Kevin and Angel, Vicar John, Pastor James,
Jack, Mommy, Daddy, and Gracie

Parents and Grandparents...

We are so blessed to have such a wonderful support system of both family and friends who truly love our children!  We had quite the crowd at the service:  24 people total!
It meant so much to us to have everyone there!
After service, everyone was invited to Mom and Dad's house for a luncheon catered by
Hudson's Smokehouse.  It was a wonderful afternoon full of great food and fellowship.

Jack finally met his "Aunt" Whitney!
(She could pass for my kids' mother.  She has the exact same hair color!)

The beautiful cake.
This cake deserves an entire post all on its own.
(Seriously...)

Oh, how I love seeing these three with my sweet babies!
They need to start having babies too....soon, please!
Hint! Hint!

Jack really seemed to enjoy his big day (despite having both a bronchial and an ear infection).
He loved all the attention and also got the chance to play with his toys...

He completely wore himself out and fell asleep on Aunt Angel...

We cannot thank everyone enough for sharing this special day with us!
A BIG thank you, especially, goes to Mom and Dad for hosting a wonderful lunch to celebrate.

Jack,
God blessed us with a beautiful, healthy baby boy, and we can't wait to teach you how to follow Him!

*As an aside, I know that many of you who read this might be Baptist and might not really understand why we Baptize our babies.  I could tell you about it, but my friend Jessica posted a very eloquent explanation a while back, and I'm going to refer to her on this one.
Thank you, Jessica for your beautiful words!

Congratulations! You look amazing (where'd you find that gorgeous dress?) and Jack is so handsome. Even in a "dress," I'd have known he was a precious little man. That face is all boy for sure! What a special day for y'all.

What a precious time! Thanks for the shout out :) Benson wore a "dress" too... it was a day gown that Kelli Ingram made and it was gorgeous and special... so I'm all for the "boy in a dress" for a baptism-- so special! :)

Actually, they teach us about this in confirmation. We're baptized as infants because we don't have to do anything to earn God's love and grace - it's showered down upon us like rain from the very beginning. The symbolism of infant baptism is that we are all God's children simply by existing and not through our own personal faith.

Confirmation is supposed to allow us to confirm our baptisms.

The symbolism might be as such, but, as a parent, the true meaning is that we are being entrusted to teach our chidren to be Christ followers and prepare them to affirm their own faith through confirmation. They don't really teach you that part...
